It was announced in February 2013 that His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI had decided to resign and relinquish his official duties of the Catholic Church. On the 12th March 2013 the papal conclave convened to elect a new Pope represented by 115 eligible Cardinals through an election process. As per tradition, after five ballots, white smoke was seen from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel to show that the minimum two thirds majority had been reached. Subsequently on the following day an announcement from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica was made to inform the world that the new Pope would be Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires from Argentina.
Archbishop Bergoglio had taken the name Pope Francis in memeory of St. Francis of Assisi. His Holiness Pope Francis was also the first Jesuit, the first Latin American and the first non-European Pope to be elected since Gregory III in 731 A.D.
